GLyn Garner

GLYN GARNER could well have been warming the Wales bench on Saturday afternoon, but thankfully the Orient custodian was in his customary position between the sticks at Brisbane Road. A couple of vital saves helped the Os to a much-needed clean sheet against Chesterfield. He spoke to leytonorient.com after the game:

Glyn, is that a point gained, given our recent form?

"It's a good result in a way as we didn't concede, and we haven't done that in a while. We never quite get it going but first half we showed some promise, and Lee was unlucky not to score with that toe-poke twenty minutes into the game. I think we're always disappointed not to win our home games, but that clean sheet is a building block now."

Are you confident that we can keep it tighter from now on then?

"The last clean sheet we kept at home was Millwall, and I think the same back four played that day. We've had so many injuries - John's been injured, Tanny's out, Clayton's been injured - so with so many changes of personnel, people playing when they're not fit, it has been difficult. But we'll take heart from this."

Was it a good enough performance that we can keep the same team again next week then?

"I hope so. Last year it was a settled side, and we only chopped and changed every now and then. This was quite a similar game to the FA Cup tie with them here last year to be fair, not really many chances and that was about it. We've only lost one in three now, so hopefully we can get another clean sheet next week and nick a couple of goals too."

They had a few late chances that usually would have sunk us - perhaps our luck's changed?

"I can't remember much that happened in the game to be honest, a lot of midfield play and that was about it. But we needed a game like that, to shut up shop, tuck the full-backs in and keep the back door locked. They were the away side, they were set up well and you can see why they've done well in this division for the last few years.'"

Did they underestimate us a bit - they seemed to be wasting time quite early in the second half?

"They tried to slow things down quite a bit, but then they've played us before, we played them twice last season and gave them a bit of a going-over at their place. We have still got the tools to do the job, but the confidence is a little bit down, so the gaffer's trying to bring in a few new faces to freshen things up. Young Peter Till did well today, nice and lively on the wing and he gives us another option there. It's good to have competition for places."

How pleased were you with your own performance?

"It was definitely better. Letting three goals in for the last few games, you go home a little paranoid thinking 'could I have done this?' or ' should I have done that?' - if you got in a car and you got bumped into every day your confidence in driving would suffer too. So you look at things and analyse them a bit more, and hopefully come through that bad patch as a team."

It probably worked out better playing here than linking up with Wales really, given their result?

"Well you never know, but I love playing for Leyton Orient, the gaffer and the club. I'd rather be playing than sitting in the stands."
