ORIENT'S youngsters opened their 2007/08 league campaign with a well-deserved 2-0 victory over Gillingham.

Pires went from creator to goalscorer ten minutes later when he collected a free-kick in the box, controlled and rifled into the roof of the net from 15 yards.

A delighted Nugent said: "I was very pleased with the performance.

"We worked very hard and deserved the three points.  We're happy to get underway after a long pre-season and we looked very fit.

"It was a good game and it proved that we've prepared well both physically and mentally.

"They were two well taken goals and we'll look to take this performance into the next game now."
