NEW ORIENT goalkeeper Stuart Nelson says he has has joined a club that matches his ambitious nature after opting to sign a two-year contract at Brisbane Road this week.

The 25-year-old stopper suffered the heartbreak of two play-off defeats during his time at Brentford and he wants to go one step further with the O's.

"I'm delighted to have joined Orient," he told leytonorient.com. "It's a club that has been chasing me and it's a club that's on the way forward. Ultimately that's what has brought me here.

"I'm an ambitious person and I've come to a club that has a hell of a lot of ambition as well.

"I just want to get on in football and progress to become the best I can be. This club also want to be the best they can be and you can see that in the ground redevelopment and from how the gaffer spoke to me when I first met him last Thursday.

"The fact that it was only a short move across town didn't really have any bearing. It wouldn't have mattered where I went as long as it was the right club to join."

The Bees, Nelson's former employers, were relegated to League Two last term and the Stroud-born stopper says the incentive of staying in League One with the O's was a major factor in him making the move from west to east London.

"I didn't want to drop down a division," he continued. "I believe I'm League One or better and I'll prove that to people this season. From what I've heard and from the vibe of the club I've picked up over the last week, I also believe that Orient will be better than League One in a very short space of time.

"Last year was a bad time for me and it was sad to leave Brentford after being relegated. We'd had two good seasons prior to that and we also started really well last year.

"We were unbeaten for the first ten or so games, so for then to get injured and be out for so long was really frustrating.

"When I came back the club was deep in relegation trouble and I was disappointed that it ended like that because I'd had some good times there.

"But now I'm really looking forward to the challenge of helping Orient to push on and I can't wait to kick off the start of the season."
