Huddersfield Town 3 - 1 Leyton Orient
Coca-Cola League One
ORIENT ended the 2006/07 season with a whimper rather than a bang as they fell to a 3-1 defeat at Huddersfield Town on Saturday.
First half goals from Michael Collins and two for Andy Holdsworth left Orient reeling at the break and atlthough they improved after half time and scored through Jason Demetriou, they left it far too late to influence the result.
But Orient will still be satisfied with with their first campaign back in League One and they will look to build on this season of consolidation when they return in August.
After releasing six players in midweek, O's boss Martin Ling made a host of changes for the visit to the Galpharm Stadium, with Glenn Morris, Aiden Palmer and Jason Demetriou given rare starts.
But the hosts were the more threatening side in the early stages and they moved in front with just 11 minutes on the clock when Mark Hudson got in behind the O's defence far too easily and crossed low for Collins to sweep home.
Collins tried his luck again six minutes later, curling a low effort weakly into Morris' arms as Huddersfield looked to make further inroads.
Another chance to do so arrived on 26 and Holdsworth gladly took advantage, getting a glancing header to Frank Sinclar's whipped cross to beat Morris.
Orient's first opportunity arrived on 33 when Alton Thelwell charged forward and received an incisive pass from Ryan Jarvis. The defender's touch let him down, however, and home stopper Matt Glennon raced from his line to gather.
The action quickly returned to the other end and Morris had to fly across his goal to palm Gary Taylor-Fletcher's free kick behind. Shortly afterwards, only a linesman's flag prevented Orient from falling three behind when Luke Beckett was judged to have fouled Adam Chambers as he headed into the net.
The third did come with the last kick of the first period, Holdsworth drilling home his second from the edge of the box after the ball was cut back to him from the left.
Orient had barely been in the Terriers' defensive third during the first half, but they reduced the deficit to two 14 minutes after the break when Jason Demetriou took the ball from debutant Solomon Shields, burst into the box and placed a fine left footed effort past the reach of Glennon.
It prompted a decent spell from the visitors and Thelwell had a stinging shot deflected over the bar a couple of minutes later.
Another scholar, Jack Page, was given his debut with 18 minutes to go with Shields going off injured, while another sub, Efe Echanomi, was showing promising glimpses of his pace.
Huddersfield were still on the search for more goals though, and Luke Beckett drilled over the top six minutes from time after working space for himself in the box.
That proved to be the last chance as Orient ended their season in defeat.
