Ling - We Have To Step Up To The Plate
THE BOOKIES may make Orient 11/2 long shots to triumph at Leeds United on Saturday, but manager Martin Ling is confident of his side's ability to pull off an upset.
And while he says that the O's must respect the flying start to the season that Dennis Wise's men have made, he insists the Londoners will go to Elland Road without fear.
He said: "It will be a big test for us - Leeds have made an unbelievable start to the season. They've only dropped two points from ten games and that's incredible. They'll certainly be full of confidence.
"We have been below where we want to be in the last couple of weeks, but our away record is excellent - we've taken 12 points from 15 games - so that' will stand us in good stead.
"It's a big stage to play on and I'm sure my players are looking forward to stepping up to the plate. I don't know the last time this club would have played in front of a 30,000 crowd for a regular league game, but it would certainly have been a long time ago - and what better incentive to put on a performance?"
Orient have tasted defeat in four of their last five starts, conceding 15 goals in the process, but they still sit joint top of the League One table and Ling is urging his players to remember that.
"We have suffered a hiccup in the last two weeks, but I'm getting fed up of reminding people that we are joint top of the league after ten games.
"I was equally tired of telling people we were playing above ourselves when we had 16 points from six games, because that was probably an unrealistic tally.
"However three points from four games is also unrealistic. I believe we are somewhere in the middle and when we perform to our best, we can give anyone in this league a game."
Ling also revealed that he won't be tempted to change his system for the trip to Leeds.
He added: "Teams that have gone there and put men behind the ball haven't been successful and that's not something we're going to do.
"We won't be going gung-ho, but I won't change the style of our game to accommodate Leeds."
Wayne Corden and Alton Thelwell face late fitness tests on shin and hamstring injuries respectively, but Glenn Morris (thigh), Clayton Fortune (shoulder) and Raphael Sylvester (hamstring) are all definitely out.
