THERE were issues settled at both ends of the League One table on Saturday afternoon, with Swansea City gaining promotion and both Port Vale and Luton Town seeing their relegation to League Two confirmed.

Swansea are ten points clear of third place with just nine to fight for and they will play Championship football next term after Guillem Bauza's double secured a 2-1 victory at Gillingham.

That increased the Kent club's relegation worries, but both Port Vale and Luton will not be able to save themselves now.

Port Vale drew 0-0 with mid-table Huddersfield Town, while Luton let a 1-0 lead slip in going down 2-1 to Brighton & Hove Albion. Sam Parkin put the Hatters in front, but goals from Ian Westlake and Glenn Murray gave the Seagulls the points.

At the right end of the table, Doncaster Rovers cut the gap to second-placed Carlisle United to three points with an invaluable 2-0 victory over Swindon Town.

Carlisle came up short at Elland Road, losing 3-2 to Leeds United in a see-saw game. Scott Dobie gave the Cumbrians a first half lead, but Leeds hit back with goals from Dougie Freedman and Jonny Howson. Carlisle levelled through Danny Graham, but Freedman's second of the afternoon sealed victory for play-off chasing Leeds.

Nottingham Forest re-took fourth spot with a 2-0 success at Tranmere Rovers. Nathan Tyson and Wes Morgan were on target for the Tricky Trees.

In-form Southend United were held at Roots Hall by Northampton Town. Colin Larkin gave the Cobblers the lead, but former Northampton loanee Lee Barnard levelled for the Essex side.

Walsall kept their play-off dream alive with a 2-1 success at Cheltenham Town. Two goals in two first half minutes from Tommy Mooney and Anthony Gerrard meant Paul Connor's 74th minute strike was little more than a consolation.

Mid-table Harltepool were beaten by Jay Simpson's early goal for Millwall, giving the Lions a major boost in their bid to dodge the drop.

Bristol Rovers are now ten games without a win after losing 2-1 at Bournemouth. Darren Anderton and Jo Kuffour scored to give the Cherries their fourth win in a row, but they are still six points short of safety.

The south coast club remain that distance adrift because of Crewe's 3-0 victory at fellow strugglers Yeovil Town. Tom Pope's late goal completed the rout after Nicky Maynard had scored twice for the Railwaymen.
